Scripture: Genesis 1: 14 - 19 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.  God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.  God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.  And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

One phrase in this text is repeated, "to give light on the earth."  Whether in the daytime or nighttime, God provides a source of light, so people can see.  Not only that, we can use these lights to track time and know the season according to the cyclical rotation.  By looking into the sky, we can determine when the heat of summer or cold of winter is coming and prepare for it.  But rather than use seasonal lights (stars) and other sources of light God gives, folks ignore them, and instead use their own lights (house lights, lamps, and flashlights).  They prefer these because they can turn them on or off at will.  They can direct the light where they want it to shine.  This goes for both kinds of light, secular and spiritual, that God provides.  The spiritual Light God gives shines down both during the day and night of our spiritual lives.  It too gets ignored in light of our own sources of spiritual light for our lives.  Realize, I am not talking about wisdom.  We can learn from many sources wisdom and information.  I am talking about the benefits of having a relationship with God and what that entails.  We gather our understanding about God and our relationship therein from the Bible (Proverbs 3: 5-6).  How pleasant it is to put away the flashlight and take a walk on a moonlite, or even just starlight, at night.  It is so peaceful.  The greatest thing about all of them, the moon, sun, stars, and God, is that they are constant.  They are always there and we know it, whether we can see them or not.  Nothing diminishes their presences or power.  Let us always remember that, come what may.

Pray with me..., Gracious God how good it is that Your Light and Presence never fail.  Nothing can diminish them.  Help us to know what that means in our heart.  Hear us as we pray for our loved ones.  We ask Your blessings upon them according to their needs.  Bless our church, Lord, so we can be the blessing You call us to be in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

God's peace,

Pastor Brian
