Scripture: Genesis 1: 6-8 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
When we read the text for today, we think, what are they talking about? What vault? Simply put, in their day they did not understand what went on above their heads. They knew that water fell from the skies from time to time. And when it fell, it fell hard and fast like a vault releasing a deluge of water. The very same kind of water that was found here on earth. And since God created it, then God controlled when the vault released and when it remained shut. Today, we know a lot more about the weather and what goes on above. We can watch the weather-forecaster show us what is to come and search the web for more information. Mystery solved. So what do we do with today's text? I hope we still see it as valid. The Bible is not a science book. The Bible is about God and our relation to God (2 Timothy 3: 16-17). Yet, the Bible has a way of interjecting some realities that make us wonder. Notice in the creation story that nothing living is created until the issue with water is sorted out. We know today, whether on our planet or another, without water no life, or at least life as we know it, exists. But some say, the way creation is explained here shows it is not valid or worth believing. But I say, isn't that how all things are? What we know today in a hundred years will be thought prehistoric compared to what is discovered. This is not true just for science. It has always been true regarding our faith in God. We don't know it all (1 Corinthians 13:12). We accept the mystery, the unknown, as being a part of our convictions and we go forth (2 Corinthians 5:7). So, when someone points this verse out to you saying it is not true. Smile and say, you're right, it is not an accurate description of our sky and atmosphere, but it is the best they could do at the time. The point of the verse is that God created the heavens and the seas, that is what I believe. But now that I know the science behind it, it amazes me all the more.
Pray with me..., Heavenly Father, the work of Your hand, the ways in which You work, can be confusing. Grant us comfort and peace as we continue to follow You. Hear us as we pray for our loved ones. Bless them in accord with their needs and bless our church, so we can be the blessing You call us to be. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Brian
