Scripture: Genesis 1: 3-5 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
While studying the topic of spiritual warfare, I came across the statement, know you have enemies. I remember thinking about that for a while. I truly believe being in Christ ensures the battle is over (Hebrews 9: 26-28). The problem is, the battle is over, but the enemy still exists. We are still tempted by evil. Like Saul, when we are told to eliminate evil from our lives, it remains (1 Samuel 15: 13-23). Evil and temptation are allowed to be a part of our day to day. Like the Tree of Good and Evil for Adam and Eve, it stood right next to the Tree of Life. It doesn't move, but it does exist. So, how does it end up in our lives? We decide to redefine it (Genesis 3: 4-5). It goes from being prohibited to "good", by our own definition (Genesis 3:6). They are no longer our enemies; they make life good and fun. That which is light and dark become dim, at best. Trying to see things for what they are in dim light is very difficult. Thankfully, most cars today are equipped with automatic headlights when darkness occurs. Otherwise, we would still have people driving around in the dark who think they can see, when they can't. In our spiritual lives, that mechanism is still manually engaged. We have to do it. But it's more than that, it is a two-step process. We have to see and define it according to what it is in God's light. It sounds easy, but it is not. Making the right decision, for the right reason at the right time is challenging. I have AGAIN started down the road of redefining my habits to ensure weight loss and healthy living. Being overweight and out of shape is literally painful at times, but..., I can still talk myself into a lot of unhealthy ways. The power and advice in the text today that I use is the word separate. God separated the light from the dark and kept them that way by labeling them as such. It works in my spiritual life too. Allow God to guide you as you keep things in their appropriate place in your life. As it were, call a spade a spade. Is it a daily endeavor, yes, but it does not have to be a chore. It could actually be what you are looking for (Psalm 25:10).
Pray with me..., Holy God we are thankful that You have given us a Guide, bit in the life of Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Help us to be sensitive to Your guidance and strengthen us to follow Your Ways. Hear us, as we ask for Your blessing upon our loved ones and upon our church. May all this bring glory to Your name, for it is in the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Brian
