Scripture: Exodus 16:10  While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.

From time to time here in Florida, we will see large billowing clouds suddenly light up from within.  It makes for quite a sight, especially when it happens at dawn or dusk.  It looks like a huge lantern in the sky.  What Israel saw when God appeared far exceeded this and would have been awe-inspiring.  At least one would think, but instead, it barely distracted them from their disgruntled state of mind.  There are definitely appropriate times to be set in our ways.  And, there are definitely times to be angry and remain unchanged by outside influences.  When we know we are in the 'right' we need to stay in the right.  But doing so, also entails us being open to change.  We need to continuously evaluate and re-evaluate our position, especially if the situation concerns our spiritual state.  Evaluating and doubting our position are two different things.  If we are not sure about something, we can still be steadfast in what we know and also willing to discuss the other.  Israel is not open to anything. They are oblivious, even to the glory of God, due to their disgruntled nature and attitude about their situation.  They are angry and upset.  They are afraid.  It's not hard to identify with them.  Most everyone has experienced this kind of situation and may even be going through it now.  Life is filled with wilderness experiences.  Let us be thankful, we have a God who understands us and is compassionate toward us, even when we do not deserve it.  In the midst of Israel's rant, before Aaron was done speaking, God manifests before them in glory and splendor.  When you find yourself giving way to negativity and anger, stay open for such moments.  Rather than continuing to fill yourself with more negative thoughts or negative things spewing forth in the media, fix your mind on God (Isaiah 26:3, Matthew 11:28) and think about God's glory (Psalm 19).  Don't try to figure everything out, just rest in the presence of God (John 14: 27 and 16:33).  Had Israel let today's vision quell their fears and frustrations, they would have been strengthened and encouraged for the journey ahead.  They would have recalled God's provision in the past and trusted God with their future, come what may.

Pray with me..., Holy God, when we are drained and frustrated in this life, help us stay open to Your presence and peace.  Hear us as we pray for our loved ones.  We ask Your blessing upon them in accordance with their needs.  We ask Your blessing upon our church.  Help us to be the people You call us to be, in Jesus' name, Amen.

God's peace,

Pastor Brian
