Devotional - September 30, 2026

Scripture: Isaiah 57: 18 I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israel’s mourners.

Today's text says a lot about God.  What precedes it is not good.  Israel has gone astray and resisted being brought back.  They come, but after being addressed by God.  God knows what they have been up to and yet decides to show mercy.  God corrects, guides, and restores them.  We all get mad at others because of their behavior toward us, that is normal.  But, to get mad and stay mad, is not what God shows us today.  At some point we need to push past the hurt feeling and start to process the situation.  We may need to address the situation by pointing out the offending behavior in one way or another.  In essence, guide them in ways that align with proper actions.  Then, restore them.  Granted, the relationship will not be like it was before.  If our trust was betrayed, we cannot overlook it.  We need to withhold ours until they prove otherwise, but we can restore a relationship with them.  It doesn't have to be close, but it can be civil, rather than hateful.  But that is not the end of it, it says God takes steps to heal them.  God is the one who takes the first steps toward reconciliation.  They have sinned against God and are bearing the consequences from God and others.  They are mourning their decisions and feel lost.  God moves toward them, regardless of how they got into their situation, and God offers grace, guidance, healing, and restoration.  That is a tall order for us to emulate, but it's worth thinking about.  For God, doing so is normal.  God is not trying to lose anyone (Luke 15: 3-7).  God does not take pleasure or rush to punish (Ezekiel 33:11).  Rather, God looks to reconcile, restore, and empower us to live the Godly life and bless us.  

Pray with me...,  Holy God, we are thankful for all the grace and restoration You give us.  The healing and guidance You provide us.  We truly are blessed.  Hear us, as we pray for our loved ones.  We ask Your blessing upon them.  We ask Your blessing upon our church.  Guide us so we can be the people You call us to be, in Jesus' name we pray.  Amen.
