Scripture: Genesis 3: 19 From dust you are and to dust you shall return.
The words in our text today come from the words God told Adam after he disobeyed God's command. They are harsh. They tell Adam that he is no longer eternal, but is now finite. They remind Adam that he was created from the earth upon which he walked. It was God who formed him. God who breathed life into his body. Some find the words depressing, but are they? I find them sobering in an encouraging way. It's when I think that I am god, that I get in all kinds of trouble. Anxiety and stress increase, and I become judgemental toward others. But when I return to my senses, the peace which God promised (John 14: 27, Phillipians 4:7) settles my soul. I remember my days are numbered, and now that I am getting along in life, I need to be reminded of it. I am not eternal, at least on earth. Every day I live is one less and I need to keep that in mind. Each day is valuable and tomorrow is not promised (Proverbs 27:1, James 4: 13-15). Does that mean I need to run around trying to do everything I want to do before it ends? No. But it does mean I need to focus on what is important and meaningful to me. I need to leave the craziness and other alone and do the things I feel need to be done, that which is important. I need to love people as they are, not what I want or think they should be. Afterall, we are all but dust. But the One who formed that dust and breathed life into it, is our God. Our God who loves us. Who on the cross bore our sins. Who is our Saviour, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Who promised always to be with us (Matthew 28:20). Are we blessed? Yes, we are blessed indeed!
Pray with me..., Thank you Lord for being the God You promise to be. Your Spirit and faithfulness are our life. Help us to keep our eyes on You when we are tempted to do otherwise. Hear us as we ask your blessing upon our loved ones and our church. Bless us, so we can give all the glory to You, in Jesus' name, Amen.
God's peace,
Pastor Brian
