Scripture: Psalm 91:4 The LORD will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Israel had many reasons to worry. They faced adversity in many ways, but God through the Psalmist, quiets their fears. The Psalms likens God to a giant desert eagle stretching out it's wings over them, covering and protecting them. It is the male eagle who provides protection for it's eaglets when they are in the nest. When the Psalmist saw the eagle doing so, he thought of God and Israel. Israel was called to be God's people. They were called to work hard and make their community in accordance with God's ways. In doing so, God would take care of them (Deut 5:33). Hardship would come, but God would see them through (Deut 28:7 & John 16:33). But, in order to enjoy such things, one must be with God, under God's care. If one is truly striving to be with God and live the Godly life, then, even when they mess up, God's faithfulness will come through for them. The power behind this text is in God's character (faithful) and Israel's willingness to be God's people. It is the LORD who will watch over them. The LORD, their God (Deut 6:4). It is good for us to see this, because this assurance is now ours through Christ. There is nothing wrong with claiming Jesus as your Lord. You are not saying He is yours and nobody else's. Nor are you saying, who is and is not in His Kingdom. He is Your Lord and you are one of His people who He watches over and provides for, come what may.
Pray with me, Holy God, we confess we focus more on what goes wrong in this life, than we focus on being Your people. Help us to trust Your faithfulness and receive the peace You give. Hear us as we pray for those who are near and dear to us, grant them Your blessing. We pray for Your blessing on our church. Guide us O God, so we can be Your people. In Jesus name, Amen.
God's peace,
Pastor Brian
