Devotional - August 5, 2026

Scripture: Matthew 7:16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles?

We've all heard it; actions speak louder than words.  And let's face it, they do.  People can say all kinds of things, but what they do is what matters.  Don't get me wrong, words are powerful.  But it is how we use them, with what intention and spirit, that makes them effective, good or bad.  When we are peaceful and speak with understanding and compassion, we can help others relax and cool-down if they are agitated and anxious (Proverbs 15:1).  Talking to someone who is joyous and cheerful can brighten one's day and revive one's spirit (Proverbs 17:22).  Being merciful or gracious toward another, especially in times like these, can go a long way when helping that person cope with life (Proverbs 16:24 and Colossians 4:6).  I hope you are proud of the work you do for God each day, no matter how great or small.  It all counts in the end.  I know some toil in their Christian service for others.  It is hard work that takes a toll mentally and physically.  Your work is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).  I like how Jesus characterizes the work done for God as grapes and figs, both of which are rich and delicious.  They are good to eat and useful for all kinds of produce.  God sees your service as such, let us strive to make it so.  Of course, the other is not so enticing, thorns and thistles.  These are weeds and treacherous weeds at that.  The Biblical writers write about them in other places.  They are only fit for being pulled up and burned (Hebrews 6:8).  Not that that is our job, but we need to recognize them when we encounter them.  You have the right to be with people who are good to you.  Who are good Christian people.  Beware, when it is your desire to be with those who may say they are Christian, but their actions speak louder than their words or appearance.  Jesus calls us to be discerning for our own good.  On the other hand, let us work for the betterment of others and the world, in Jesus' name.   

Pray with me...,  Holy God, help us to be discerning.  Help us to accomplish Your will in ways that are good and productive.  Hear us as we pray for our loved ones.  We ask Your blessing upon them and upon.  Bless them, O God, in accordance with their needs.  And Lord, we ask Your blessing upon our church.  Bless us, so we can be the blessing You call us to be, in Jesus' name, Amen.
